Abortion is still a debatable topic in today’s society. While some consider it a social evil, others think differently. But that does not take the fact out of the equation that abortion has very high, life threatening risk to an individual. About 10% of women undergoing the procedure are likely to suffer immediate complications of which 2% are considered life threatening. The most common abortion risks that the patient faces are:
- Excessive Bleeding
- Tear in cervix
- Endotoxic Shock
Studies also show that women who have multiple abortion face a much greater risk of experiencing these complications. More than 30% of teenagers are accountable for all the abortion performed in a year, teenagers are at a higher health and mental risk compared to elder women.
Surgical Abortion Risks
A surgical abortion is a procedure that ends a pregnancy by removing the fetus and placenta from the mother’s uterus. The most common risk after an abortion is infection in the uterus or womb, when the doctor fails to remove the fetus and the associated tissue completely. Infection may also occur few days after the abortion which may result in heavy bleeding in the vagina with cramps in the abdominal region. Sanitary pads are used until the bleeding stops.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is a life threatening disease which can lead to ectopic pregnancy and reduced fertility. The patient is likely to develop PID within four weeks of the abortion if the patient has a history of chlamydia. The disease causes pain around the pelvis or lower abdomen. Yellowish vaginal discharge with signs or fever and vomiting.
Women who have under gone more than one pregnancy as like to become infertile and sterile, meaning the women might not be able to conceive again.
Abruptio Placenta is a condition where the placenta tears from the uterine lining while aborting the fetus. This results in extreme life threatening bleeding.
Studies show that women who undergo the process of abortion face 50% increase in breast and cervical cancer. The increased cancer risk is due to the disturbance in the normal hormonal balance and the frequent cervical damage. The chances of cancer doubles if the woman has a family history of breast or cervical cancer.
Medical Abortion Risks
Medical abortion is performed in the first trimester within the first eight weeks of pregnancy. It is done with a combination of two medication, miferpristone and misoprostol. The drug is known by the name RU-486 or abortion pill. The pills are taken orally which induce miscarriage. Though RU-486 is approved by FDA it still has life threatening abortion side effects.
The side effect is usually caused by the second pill misoprostol, which include heavy headache, bleeding, vomiting , nausea, diarrhea and heavy cramping. Prolonged heavy bleeding is a sign of incomplete abortion, which could require an aspiration abortion, the physician removes the remaining parts of the fetus by creating a suction with an electric or manual pump.
Though surgical and medical abortion have high physical risks involved psychological abortion risks can be equally devastating, as the patient suffers from mood swings, shame, sense of loneliness, depression and anxiety. In extreme cases the patient might loose the will to live.
