Antibiotics For Strep Throat

Penicillin

Penicillin is the first choice to treat strep throat. It is one of the most effective  antibiotics , it is a narrow spectrum agent that does not promote antimicrobial resistance. A child is given a dosage of 250 mg thrice a day while a adult is prescribed 500mg tablet. It can also be given by injection. Major side effects of penicillin are nausea, chest pain vomiting and headache.

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin has few advantages over penicillin because of longer plasma life and lower protein binding activity. Amoxicillin has side effects like rashes and gastrointestinal problems. Chewable tablets of amoxicillin are also available, adults are given 500mg of tablets which should be taken thrice everyday for 10 days.

Cephalexin

It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It stops the growth of bacterias and prevents spreading of the infection. Antibiotics works best when the level of antibiotics is kept constant in the body so take the dosage at regular intervals as prescribed by the doctor.

Cefuroxime Axetil

This antibiotic works at a much faster rate and a short course of about 5 days is enough to treat a strep throat. It is mostly prescribed to children and teenagers. It should be taken twice everyday after a meal regularly for 5 days.

Erythromycin

It is another very effective antibiotic to treat strep throat. Erythromycin should be taken regularly for 10 days, three times a day. Consult a doctor before taking it. It is popularly known as ERYC or Ery-tab.

Antibiotics for strep throat should only be taken once you are diagnosed for bacterial infection. Doctor diagnoses a strep throat by physical examination of the throat and throat cultures. A patient becomes non contagious within a couple of days of taking the antibiotics. Each time you take antibiotics few of the bacterias mutate and it is difficult to kill them as they do not respond to antibiotics anymore so don’t take antibiotics when you don’t need them. Contact your doctor if you have any side effects like diarrhea, skin rash or difficulty in breathing.
