Having cramps before period is normal but if period does not start even after a week or so then it is possible that you are pregnant. It is one of the most common cause of cramps but no period. During menstrual cycle cramps are caused due to contraction of uterine muscles and shedding off the inner lining of the uterine walls causing bleeding. In few cases cramps can also be caused due to other reasons which are explained in detail below.

Causes of Cramps But No Period

As stated earlier pregnancy is one of the most common causes of cramps but no period. When the egg gets fertilized then the zygote attaches on the inner wall of the uterus and the endometrial tissues do not shed. As a result you won’t have normal bleeding however, you will notice blood spots which is caused due to bleeding of inner wall of uterus when the zygote attaches to it. Cramps may continue for several days as the uterus expands continuously to make space for the growing child causing stretching of the uterine tissues and surrounding ligaments.

Ovarian Cysts:

Another possible reason of cramps but no period is the formation of ovarian cysts. During ovulation when the egg leaves the ovary then a cyst may be formed on the surface of the ovary when the follicle fails to rupture properly before releasing the egg. Ovarian cysts can make you suffer from intense pain in the abdominal region.

Ovarian Cancer:

Ovarian cancer is the most fatal disease which affects the uterus and one of the major symptoms of ovarian cancer is abdominal cramps. Doctors may misdiagnose the disease as the symptoms are quite similar to a irritable bowel syndrome. If you are having other problems like bloating, swelling, urinary urgency along with cramps then you should consult your doctor, if treatment is delayed then it may lead to death.

Uterine Fibroid:

Uterine fibroid are small benign tumor which develop in the uterus and nearby areas which can cause regular cramps in the pelvic region. Fibroid are present in most of the women however, does not cause any difficulty in most of cases but if the size increases then it can lead to greater complications.

Autoimmune Oophoritis:

Autoimmune Oophoritis may cause infertility, cramps and lack of menstruation. In few women the immune system of the body starts attacking the ovary causing inflammation of the ovary and the inflammation results in the hardening and destruction of the ovaries.

If you are having period like cramps but no period then you should check yourself for pregnancy. You can do this yourself at home or you can go to a clinic. If there are no signs of pregnancy then you should consult your doctor to find out the cause of cramps but no period. Treatment of any disease affecting uterus and ovary should start at the early stage because it may lead to irreversible damages and infertility.
