Heartburn is a common problem in pregnant ladies. Many of them may have heartburn for the first time in their life during pregnancy. How heartburn and pregnancy related to each other are is a common query of pregnant women. Heartburn is caused when acid from stomach comes up in the esophagus. It causes a burning sensation in the chest , in  between your breastbone and  throat. The acid can also come up into your mouth which leaves a sour and bitter taste in the mouth. The acid can form in the stomach due to various reasons, mostly due to the food we eat.

During pregnancy the progesterone level increases in the body whose function is to relax the muscles of the womb. Another effect of progesterone is that it relaxes the valve which separates the stomach and the gullet. As a result the acids come up through the gullet which causes a burning sensation. Progesterone slows down the contraction of the stomach which affects digestion. Also as the baby grows it puts pressure on the stomach causing the acids to move up to the esophagus. After the delivery of baby the problem of heartburn subsides within few days.

There are many ways by which you can control and avoid heartburn during pregnancy, few of them which give remarkable relief are listed below:

Small Meals:

Avoid eating big meals. Instead, distribute your diet into several small meals which you can take after every 3 to 4 hours.

Drink More:

Drink as much liquid as possible. But do not drink water while eating, it may increase the chances of acid reflux.

Ginger:

Eating ginger gives relief from stomach upsets like nausea and vomiting. It also helps in reducing the burning sensation in the chest.

Sleeping Posture:

When your chest and stomach are in same level then acid can easily enter the esophagus. So you should keep your upper body raised either by putting pillows under your back or raise the head side of the bed.

Loose Fitting Clothes:

Tight clothes increase the pressure on the stomach causing the acids to come out of it so you should wear loose clothes.

Avoid Spicy Foods:

Spicy food relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter increasing the risk of heartburn. However, all women are not affected by spicy foods. You may have problem after eating any other food like chocolate or caffeine. You should know which food is causing heartburn and avoid it.

Eat Slowly:

Do not hurry while eating. Eating food without chewing it properly can increase the risk of indigestion and heartburn. Do not sleep just after eating.

Take Antacids:

If you are not noticing any major improvement even after taking the above measures you may opt for antacids which will reduce the acids and give you relief from heartburn

Heartburn and Pregnancy is Not a Myth:

So heartburn and pregnancy are quite closely associated and not a myth but it should not be a reason of concern because it is very natural problem and you will get relief within few months and there are no other complications related to it. However, if you facing too much difficulty then you should consult your doctor, he will prescribe medicines to reduce heartburn.
