HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and as the name suggests it affects the immune system of the body and makes it very weak and as a result our immunity to various diseases and infections reduces. Is HIV curable? Is a major topic of discussion worldwide because of its increasing number of of cases especially in developing and under developed countries. Scientist and doctors are working very hard everyday to find a cure for the virus but till now they have not got any success.

The person has various health problems only when HIV leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS). HIV person may receive AIDS diagnosis after several years of being infected by the disease. HIV weakens the immune system to such extent  that it is unable to fight various infections and these infections can cause major life threatening diseases.

Scientist are now focusing on making the immune system of the person having HIV stronger so that it can provide protection from various infections. They have also got success in slowing down the rate at which HIV is affecting the immune system. Retrovirus treatments are available by which you can delay the illness for many years by suppressing HIV.

Doctors have also successfully treated many diseases caused due to AIDS. In 2008 bone marrow transplant was given to a HIV positive person and after several months no traces of the virus were found in the body of the person. However, bone marrow transplant is not a viable option for curing HIV because it of its huge cost and various complications after the transplant. Many patients undergoing bone marrow transplant die due to reaction from the transplant and chemotherapy.

Although HIV is not curable you can live a normal life by delaying AIDS,thus having a better life expectancy. Several drugs are available which interrupt the virus from multiplying which help to delay the onset of various infections. Major types of drugs which are available in the market are Reverse transcriptase inhibitors, Protease inhibitors, Nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and the most recent fusion inhibitors.

A combination of several drugs called highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) is currently used to delay the onset of AIDS. Infections complications can also be successfully treated with the help of various drugs. These drugs have to be taken regularly for rest of the life so it may show side effects as well. Several harmful chemicals have been claimed to cure HIV because of the wrong conception that if a chemical is able to kill the virus in a test tube then it will also be effective in a human body.  Instead of curing these chemicals worsen the condition of the person.

The answer to Is HIV curable? Is certainly no and so you should never trust a person who is claiming to cure HIV. Always take medicines which have been certified and passed by a reputed organization. Many people panic when they are told that are HIV positive and are ready to try anything which claims to cure it. Before trying any new medicine or therapy consult your doctor or  a reputable health organization.
