Is Psoriasis Contagious

Psoriasis is one of the most common chronic skin diseases which affects us. Since the disease is widespread many people have the query Is Psoriasis Contagious? The answer to this is obviously no because it is a immune disorder syndrome and not any infections. A disorder can’t be transmitted from one person to other. It is impossible to get transmitted either by direct or indirect transmission. There is not even one evidence to prove that Psoriasis is contagious. It generally affects people who are in the age group 15 to 40.  You must know what actually causes Psoriasis to understand why Psoriasis is not contagious.

Psoriasis Causes:

  • During normal condition our body produces new skin due to which the old skin dies and falls off. But in case of Psoriasis due to weak immune system which can be caused as a result of poor diet, alcohol and insufficient Vitamin D in our body the old cells do not fall off while the new skin is pushed to the surface due to which the old skins accumulate on the surface.
  • It can also be triggered due to genetic disorders. Genetic disorder may cause breakdown of exact immune system due to which excessive hormones flow in the skin and causes accumulation of dead cells. If someone’s family has a track record of Psoriasis then he is at higher risk of suffering from Psoriasis.
  • Another notable reason which increases the chances of Psoriasis is temperature. People who are living in cold areas are more likely to suffer from Psoriasis than others.

Psoriasis Symptoms:

  • Weak immune system does not command our body to shed the old skin so you may notice dead skin in form of red scaly patches. You may also notice white and flaky patches on the skin.
  • Patients may notice improvement in their condition however, the red patches come back after few days.
  • The appearance of patches may vary. You may notice puss filled yellow blisters, small red spots or flat red patches in the moist areas especially in the folds of the skin which you may confuse as a symptom of fungal infection.
  • On the nails it appears as very small white spots and if it is affecting your scalp then you may notice white flakes which may be confused with dandruff.
  • Psoriasis can also cause joint problems. Patients suffering from Psoriasis also complain of severe pain in the joints. This condition is also called as Psoriatic Arthritis.
  • Medication can also cause Psoriasis in certain individuals. Propranolol which is used to prevent heart attack or lithium which treats depression and even Anti malarials can trigger Psoriasis.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Psoriasis:

Psoriasis can be diagnosed by physical examination, reviewing family history and X rays of the joints. There are various treatments options for psoriasis. It can be treated by Medication and Light Therapy. Applying topical creams, sprays and lotions are very effective in curing the skin rashes. You can also opt for Light therapies in which UV rays are used to treat the rashes and you may notice clear skin after few sessions. Even going out in the sun can help in improving the condition.

Is Psoriasis contagious is a least important reason to worry about. You are totally safe if you come in contact with a Psoriasis patient. Proper awareness should be created so that people do not discriminate those who are suffering from the disease. Stay close to them and make them feel comfortable.
