All About Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Prognosis

Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma Prognosis

Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a type of cancer which affects the lymphatic system of the body. The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system and is responsible to fight against diseases affecting the body. In NHL tumors develop from the lymphocytes which is a type of white blood cell. NHL can start almost anywhere because lymphatic tissues are found in many parts of the body, it’s become very difficult to determine non hodgkin’s lymphoma prognosis.

Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma prognosis:

In US alone almost 60000 patients are diagnosed of NHL. Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma prognosis depends on several factors like the age of the patient, overall health, stage of the disease and the part affected. In recent past the survival rate of patients has highly increased due to the advancements in the treatment facilities. NHL generally affects elderly person who are in their 60s and the risk increases if the immune system of the person is weak due to certain infections, HIV or medications which suppress the immune system.

In a normal person the old lymphocytes die and it is replaced by new ones but in people who are suffering from NHL the lymphocytes divide and grow. The lymph nodes swell due to the accumulation of lymphocytes. If you are noticing swellings especially in your lymph nodes present in the neck, groin or armpits and are having other NHL symptoms like fatigue, fever, rapid weight loss, chest and abdominal pain then you should talk to your doctor immediately and go for complete medical check up and tests. The disease can spread to different parts of the body because it is cancerous so it is important to diagnose it as soon as possible.

Tests to diagnose Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma

There are several tests to diagnose NHL and the stage of the disease which generally starts with a physical test. Doctor also takes help of imaging tests like CT or MRI scan to detect the exact location and size of the tumor. You can be recommended to go for a biopsy procedure in which a sample of lymph node is used for testing. Once the tests are completed the doctor can give a rough prognosis depending on the results of the reports. But giving a exact Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma prognosis is very difficult because there are so many factors which are affecting it.

Doctors use five risk factors to predict the survival odds of the person which are being older than 60, functional ability of the patient, having a disseminated tumor, having high LDH protein level and whether the disease has spread to other parts other than the nodes. If you have one or two of these than you have the best chances of survival and highest life expectancy.

Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma Survival rate

Currently the five year survival rate is almost 65% in case of adults. Post treatment therapies like immunotherapy  help in increasing the chances of survival and speeds up the recovery process. Many people live with lymphoma in remission for many years after treatment. Chemotherapies and radiation used for treatment can live long term affects on several organs.
