If someone’s tip of nail has lift off the bed, then he may be suffering from Onycholysis. Onycholysis treatment is very important as the lifted nails allow dirt to accumulate under the nail which increases the risk of infection and increases complications. It can be caused due to various reasons like internal disorder, nail injury, infection, iron deficiency or an overactive thyroid and even improper manicure. It is generally observed in adults and women are at higher risk as compared to men.

Treatment For Hyperthyroid :

Proper medication should be taken by the patient so that the iron deficiency in the body can be removed. Deficiency of iron is a major cause of Onycholysis so keeping iron level under control can reduce reduces the risk of Onycholysis.

Fungal Nail Treatment :

Various anti fungal medicines are present in the market which play an important role in treatment and avoid further complications. Apply antifungal daily to avoid infection of the nail. Some common antifungal are allylamine and imidazole.

Intralesional Injections :

When the condition becomes serious, Intralesional Injection may be required which is a very painful procedure as the injection is given in the nail bed so a topical anesthesia must be used to reduce the pain.

Onycholysis Treatment at Home:

Tea Tree Oil: Apply the oil in the affected region before going to sleep.

Garlic Oil: Rub the oil on the affected area and cover it with gloves.

Epsom Salt: Apply Epsom salt to the affected area by mixing the salt in warm water and soak the affected part for half an hour.

  • The nails should be cleaned and avoid moisture to reduce the chances of infection.
  • Avoid tapping nails on any hard surface.
  • Patients should trim the part of the nail which has come off.
  • Those who have to do wet work must take proper precaution by wearing light cotton gloves under vinyl gloves.
  • Avoid wearing tight socks and shoes and change the socks daily.

Onycholysis treatment may take several months before the disease is properly cured. It might permanently change the appearance. What you can do is to take preventive measures to avoid occurrence of onycholysis. Always go to a certified and experienced specialist for manicure and avoid overuse of nail cosmetics. Proper hygienic conditions can reduce the risk of onycholysis.
