Peanut allergy is one of the most common type of food allergy,affecting about 1% of the population. Peanut allergy symptoms can appear within minutes of consuming peanuts. A person suffers from peanut allergy because the immune system may assume certain proteins in  peanut dangerous for the body. Due to this immune system produces antibody called IgE which triggers production of excessive histamine in the body to fight against the allergen.

Histamine spreads in different parts of the body due to which various changes in the body are observed which are the allergy symptoms. The severity of peanut allergy symptoms may be very mild or can be life threatening requiring immediate medical support depending on how much sensitive you are to peanuts. There are no known causes why certain people’s immune system reacts to peanuts.

You may observe small red, swollen welts appear on your skin within few minutes of eating peanuts, also called as hives. Patches of red, dry itchy skin may also appear in different parts. Itching sensation in the mouth has also been observed.

Stomach Problem

Various problems related to stomach are the most conventional peanut allergy symptoms. You may suffer from nausea, intense pain in stomach and vomiting. Person may also have diarrhea due to which he may become very weak and exhausted.

Runny Nose

If you are allergic to peanuts then you may have runny nose because of production of histamine due to ingestion of allergens which generally triggers runny nose frequent sneezing.

Shortness Of Breath

The allergic person suffers from shortness of breath and has difficulty in breathing. You may also notice whistling sound when the person is breathing. Peanut allergy increases the risk of asthma attack.

Increased Heartbeat

Another common effect of increased level of histamine in the body is increased heartbeat. Person may get panicked due to rise in heartbeat and may suffer from excessive sweating.


The most dangerous and fatal symptom of peanut allergy is anaphylaxis. Emergency medical support should be provided immediately otherwise it may cause death of the person. The major symptoms of anaphylaxis are intense difficulty in breathing, low blood pressure, swelling of throat and lips and loss of consciousness.

If you are noticing certain symptoms on consumption of peanut then you must go for allergy test for which you may have to undergo diet elimination test, skin test and blood test. The best way to stop peanut allergy symptoms is to strictly avoid eating peanuts. There is no medicine to stop the allergy however, you can control the symptoms by taking antihistamines. Those having severe allergic reactions should be hospitalized immediately and given an injection of epinephrine.
