Polycystic Kidney Disease Symptoms

Polycystic kidney disease is caused due to formation of numerous cysts in the kidney and it is one of the major diseases which cause kidney failure. Polycystic Kidney Disease Symptoms usually appear after 35 years; however, it affects children as well. The major cause of polycystic kidney disease is genetics, the disease passes from one generation to the next generation.

There are very rare cases when a person is affected by PKD without any family history as a result of genetic mutation. The function of kidney is too purify blood by extracting excess liquid and waste from it. When the cysts spread in the kidney , then it absorbs liquid due to which size of the Kidney may increase upto 3 times. Autosomal dominant PKD and Autosomal recessive PKD are the two types of PKD affecting people; however the latter one is very rare. The symptoms of ADPKD show up at later stages of life while the symptoms of ARPKD can be observed in childhood.

Polycystic Kidney Disease Symptoms

High Blood Pressure

It is one of the initial Polycystic kidney symptom. You may notice high blood pressure in children as well. If the blood pressure becomes very high then you may suffer from headache as well.

Pain In Abdomen

Due to presence of cysts, the size of kidney increases but due to limited space you may suffer from intense pain in the lower abdomen, just below the rib cage, where the kidney is located. The pain might be caused as a result of bleeding from cysts or if infections spreads to different surrounding tissues.

Blood In Urine

You may notice blood in the urine and also suffer from intense pain and burning sensation in the urinary tract when you urinate.

Kidney Stone

Kidney stone forms due to crystallization of excess oxalic acid. Stones do not give pain when they are in kidney but once it reaches the ureter it may cause intense pain. The chances of kidney stone formation increses if you are suffering from PKD.

Frequent Urination

Frequent urge to urinate can be caused due to Polycystic Kidney disease. The cysts do not allow the kidney to function properly due to which you may suffer from polyuria and consequently you will feel thirsty more often, a condition known as polydipsia.

Urinary Tract Infections

If you are suffering from PKD then you are more prone to suffer from frequent urinary tract infections due to which you may have to suffer from worse complications. The infection must be treated immediately because if the infection spreads in the cysts then it becomes very difficult to treat it.

Polycystic kidney disease symptoms are hard to diagnose in children because the size of cysts are very small and the number of cysts too are very less due to which there are special criteria for children to be diagnosed for AKD. Advanced kidney imaging technologies like ultrasound, CT and MRI scan are very useful in the diagnosis process. The specific treatment of AKD is not available yet; however, you can curb the symptoms by taking problem specific medicines.

You can take aspirin for pain relief and can also opt for surgery to reduce the size of cysts. Infections in the urinary tract can be treated by taking antibiotics. Healthy diet and lifestyle changes are helpful in reducing blood pressure and reducing the complications.
