Schizoaffective disorder refers to the disorder in which a person suffers from a combination of mental disorder that is schizophrenia and affective mood disorder which may be bipolar depression. Schizoaffective disorder symptoms include the symptoms of schizophrenia as well as the manic depressions. It is very difficult to diagnose because of its similarities to other mental disorders. Studies show that it is hereditary. It may also be caused due to infection or exposure to toxins when the child is inside the womb.

Changes in chemicals levels in the brain especially serotonin or dopamine in brain may lead to the disorder. If the person has the disorder he generally shows the symptoms in early 20s. Hallucinations and Delusions:

Person may see objects or listen to sounds which is actually not there but is only an imagination. They are unable to differentiate between reality and imaginations. The person may actually respond to his situation and shows unusual behavior.

Irritability:

A schizoaffective disorder patient can get easily irritated. Person gets upset on minor issues very often and can loose his temper and may argue or start fighting.

Mood Swings:

Mood swing is a common schizoaffective disorder symptom due to which his mood may change within seconds. If he is happy now then after few seconds he may get extremely depressed. The mood swings may cause problem in the professional as personal life as the person is unable to control his emotions.

Inattentive:

The person is unable to concentrate on one activity and can get easily distracted. He is unable to follow to what is being said to him because of inattentive. Due to this the person is unable to perform in his office and also affects his studies.

Catatonic Behavior:

It means the person may show behavior which are extremely opposite to each other. He may be blabbering and hyperactive or he may also behave as if he is in a comma and this happens very quickly.

Suicidal Tendency:

Due to depression and feeling of worthlessness a person may decide to commit suicide. He may also attempt suicide when the person starts imagining that he is immortal and nothing can harm him may jump from a height or do other life threatening activities.

Diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder is done after the doctor takes interview of the persons and reviews the schizoaffective disorder symptoms shown by the person in the past. A complete treatment of schizoaffective disorder is not possible however, you can control the symptoms with psychotherapy and medications. In psychotherapy doctors tells the patient about the problems and how the person can control them. Medications generally include antipsychotics which help to stop hallucinations and delusions while antidepressants are given to control the mood swings.

Family and social support is very important for the schizoaffective disorder patients, you must treat them normally and give proper attention to them.
