Sore throat symptoms for many underlying medical disorders like cold,flu ot tonsillitis. The patient usually experiences pain and discomfort in the throat which is aggravated by swallowing. Sore throat can have various causes.
Most cases of sour throat symptoms are caused by viruses. There are a wide array of viruses that are responsible for causing sour throat, that accompany cold,flu,whooping cough and measles. Viruses like Epstein-Barr and Rhino-virus are responsible for causing glandular fever and common cold which result in sore throat.
The most common bacterial infection that causes sore throat is strep throat. It is caused by streptococcal bacteria. The infection can lead to rheumatic fever which can cause damage to heart valves and kidney. The bacteria can also cause scarlet fever,pneumonia and sinusitis.
Allergy among the major causes of sore throat. People allergic to dust,pollens,molds or animal hair causes itchy nose,sneezing and nasal drip. When these allergens are inhaled it irritates the throat.
Tonsillitis is the inflammation of tonsils. The inflammation causes a lot of pain and discomfort in the throat making it difficult to swallow or breath. Sore throat is the most common symptom for tonsillitis.
Excessive smoking leads to dry and sore throat.
Sore Throat Symptoms
There are many symptoms of sore throat the most common one being pain while swallowing and coughing, other symptoms are:-
Sinus infection or sinusitis and post nasal drip can cause sore throat. Post nasal drip gives the sensation of a runny nose in the back of your throat.
Bad breath is a symptom of dry mouth and sore throat. Lack of saliva disrupts the natural cleaning of the mouth. Decaying food particles between the teeth results in bacterial growth causing bad breath and sore throat.
Prolonged coughing due to inhalation of allergens such as dust,smoke, pollens or due to throat infection causes sore throat.
Pain while swallowing
Person suffering from sore throat usually experiences pain while swallowing food or drinking fluids. The food particles rubbing against the dry tissue causes pain. Spicy and salty food are more likely to cause pain and discomfort.
Change in Voice
Person having sore throat may notice change in voice, hoarseness is a common problem of sore throat. He may also have difficulty in speaking.
Home remedies for sore throat
- Take a glass of lukewarm water, add a teaspoon of salt and gargle. Repeat this at least thrice a day.
- Have a hot beverage like tea or coffee frequently.
- Mix ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a cup of boiling water and slowly consume the mixture for faster relief.
- Quit smoking and drink warm water or milk as many times as possible.
- A mixture of honey and ginger provides relief from sore throat and reduces fever.
- Eat fruits rich in vitamin C as it develops the immune system.
- Chewing garlic reduces the pain in the throat as it has potent antibacterial.
Sore throat is accompanied by tiredness, headaches, nausea, aching muscles and sneezing. High temperature mostly follows these symptoms 38-40C. When sore throat symptoms persists longer than four to six days duration, due to viral or bacterial disease you should seek medical attention.
